How Should I Clean My Cabinets?

After you hire a custom cabinet company to install new cabinets in your home, you may be left wondering how you can keep them looking as good as the first day they were put in.

Regular cleaning of your cabinets can preserve their appearance so they look great for years to come. These are our cabinet cleaning recommendations.

Cleaning Your Cabinets

If you want to maintain a beautiful finish for your cabinets, then you have to keep them clean, both inside and outside. Plan to clean inside your cabinets at least once a month, and try to clean outside your cabinets every week so they stay in good shape. You don’t have to do a deep clean every time; just make sure they’re wiped down regularly. Maintenance cleaning is the easiest way to keep your cabinets looking nice, year after year.

Cleaning Inside

Wondering how to clean inside cabinets? It’s simple!

Start by emptying out your cabinets and removing dust with a soft cloth or feather duster.

Next, clean out your cabinets using a mild vinegar/water solution (1 cup water, 1 cup vinegar) or light soap solution (1 teaspoon dish soap, 1 cup water).

You can do this with a damp — not wet! — towel. Other special wood cleaning solutions are available on the market, too, if you prefer to use those to clean your cabinets.

When you’re done, dry the inside of your cabinets with a clean towel.

Note: Never use all-purpose cleaners, as they’re incredibly harsh and can ruin your cabinets.

Cleaning Outside

When you need to clean outside cabinets, it’s quick and easy.

Use the same cleaning solution you chose for inside your cabinets to clean outside your cabinets, taking special care to clean in all the crevices.

A cotton swab will allow you to carefully clean around cabinet hinges, handles, and knobs.

As you did when you cleaned inside the cabinets, dry the outside of your cabinets with a clean towel.

Stubborn Cabinet Stains

Stubborn stains can be removed with a stain eraser product, or even baking soda. If you use a stain eraser product, be gentle — no scrubbing! — so you can maintain the cabinets’ finish. If you use baking soda, mix two parts baking soda with one part water (such as 2/3 cup baking soda, 1/3 cup water), cover the stain with the paste, and rub lightly at the stain until it’s gone.

Not all cabinets are made the same — different materials can occasionally call for different forms of cleaning. When you have cabinets put in by a custom cabinet company, be sure to ask about how you can best care for your cabinets. Care will ultimately depend on what type of cabinets you’ve chosen for your space, and the cabinet experts you work with can share the ideal cleaning method.

Note: Cabinet finishes do not like excessive water! Be sure your cleaning cloth is only damp, not wet, and then dry your cabinets after wiping them down!
