3 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Beginning Your Kitchen Remodel

A kitchen remodel is definitely something to get excited about! After all, who doesn’t love new things, especially when it’s something as important as an updated kitchen? New custom kitchen cabinets, new countertops, new appliances, new fixtures… before you know it, you’ll be operating in a whole new space!

As exciting as a kitchen remodel can be, it’s also expensive, demanding, and exhausting (yes, even if you’re not the one actually doing the work). At Kustom Kabinetry, we understand all too well the feelings of stress and overwhelm that come from the process, and we’re here to help you take control of your project from the start by sharing three important questions you should ask yourself before you begin your kitchen remodel.

The 3 Questions

Once you’ve decided that you want to move forward with a kitchen remodel, suddenly you’ll be faced with a lot of decisions, some of which you probably didn’t even know you’d have to make!

Of course you need to think about who you’ll hire, what your timeline will be, how you’ll prepare meals in the midst of the chaos, and other important considerations. But when it comes down to it, there are three questions you should ask yourself before you even reach out to a contractor and keep in mind throughout the duration of your kitchen remodel.

  1. What is your budget?

Like most big things (think weddings and vacations), the financial plan you set for your kitchen remodel can make a big difference in how smoothly your project goes and how much stress your project causes you. A budget is defined as “a plan for using money” and the whole point of a budget is to avoid overspending (Merriam-Webster).

If you don’t have a budget set for your project, then you won’t be telling your money where it’s going. Instead, it’ll tell you, and before you know it, you’ll have spent thousands of extra dollars on lots of little things that add up. The worst part? You won’t even know where any of it went! So think about how much you have, or how much you’re willing to spend, and then do your research on how much things cost. Once you’ve done all that, set a realistic budget and stick to it. (That’s the true key.)

  1. What are your non-negotiables?

When you start a kitchen remodel from scratch, anything goes, so you can get everything you need and nothing you don’t. Everyone uses their kitchen differently, and that’s because everyone has different lifestyles. Whether you find yourself spending most of your day at home and using your kitchen three times a day or you only spend the evenings at home and use your kitchen once in the evening to heat up dinner, your kitchen needs are unique.

Someone who prepares breakfast, lunch, and dinner at home may not need the same countertop space as someone who rushes home from work just to heat up a frozen dinner in the microwave or oven before heading off to their next event. So when you’re planning your kitchen remodel, think about what you need most. Is it lots of space in a big pantry tower for your staple items? Is it plenty of custom kitchen cabinets that hold the dishware you use for all the dinners you regularly host? Think about your must-haves and relay them to your contractor before the project begins.

  1. How will you use the space on a day-to-day basis?

A kitchen remodel gives you the opportunity to customize your kitchen in a way that works for you and reflects how you like to use the space most. Before you move forward with your project, think about how you use your kitchen every day. Do you cook, bake, play games, help with homework? Maybe all that and more?

Thinking about these things before you start can help you decide which features you absolutely need (like plenty of cabinet space) and which features you can go without (like fancy countertops). Your kitchen is meant to be the heart of your home, and with a blank slate in front of you, you can figure out exactly what should be done to achieve the beauty you want and the functionality you need.
