How Long Will We Be Without a Countertop?

The kitchen is meant to be a place of warmth and joy, full of all good things, including food, family, friends, and fun! That’s why it’s known as the heart of the home. We spend a lot of time in the kitchen, so it makes sense that it should look and work the way we want it to! And that’s where upgrades happen.

While any renovations or remodels you do in your kitchen will pay off in the long run, it can be tough to navigate around a construction zone — especially when that construction zone affects your countertops. As homeowners ourselves, we know how exciting, yet frustrating it can be when you’re in the middle of upgrading your home. You’re so close to a new and improved space, but dealing with it in the meantime can be a bit of a headache.

If you’re looking to get custom cabinets in your kitchen, you may be wondering, “How long will we be without a countertop?” and “When can we use the kitchen again?”

The answer is sooner than you might think!

The Order of Kitchen Remodels

When you hire a custom cabinet builder to redo your kitchen, you’ll notice there’s a defined order of operations. If you’re going all in for your kitchen remodel, you can first expect an installation of your cabinets, then your countertops and, finally, your backsplash (if you choose to have one!).

This order is essential for a few reasons. Primarily, it ensures a seamless look in the kitchen, since every item is installed on top of the previous element it needs to be stable. Secondly, it helps all the finishes look their absolute best together so you get a final product that’s aesthetically pleasing.

How Long Does It Take to Install the Countertop?

It’s hard to function without cabinets, but it might be even harder to deal with no countertops!

As a general rule, you can expect your countertops to go in about two weeks after your cabinets are installed. This timeline may be longer or shorter depending on the type of countertop material you’re using, and whether or not the supplier has it in stock.

Which Countertops Are Right for you?

When it comes to selecting a countertop, you’ll quickly find that the options are pretty much limitless. At Kustom Kabinetry, we install a variety of countertops for our customers. Some of our most popular options include the following:

  • Quartz. This is our best-selling option, and for good reason. It’s beautiful, durable and resistant to heat, scratches, and stains. It offers the look and feel of granite without the same maintenance requirements.
  • Corian. Corian is a great material, although it tends to be soft and vulnerable to heat. It can, however, be easily repaired and has a long lifespan.
  • Granite. Granite is a great, durable counter surface as well, but is more  prone to cracking, staining, and scratching, and requires some routine maintenance
  • Laminate. A great option for the budget-conscious consumer, laminate can offer the look of stone without the price tag.

Once you’ve chosen a countertop, you’ll need to select a faucet to go with it. We request that our customers supply their own faucets, and that the hardware is at the job site when the countertop measure takes place, which is typically two days after the cabinets are installed.
