A kitchen remodel can be an exciting project or a very stressful experience. It mainly depends on three things: whether you know what you want or not, how well you plan the whole project, and whether or not the custom cabinet builder you get to do the job is a professional. Let us examine the steps involved in more detail.
Answer The Difficult Questions
The following questions will to a large extent determine the scope and cost of your kitchen update:
- What is your maximum budget? Once you have a ballpark figure, it will force you to be realistic.
- Which features do you regard as essential and which are optional?
- How many people are going to use it?
- Apart from cooking, would you like the kitchen to be a place to socialize or work?
- Should there be provision for laundry?
- How much storage space would you like?
- Should there be space for your pet(s) to eat and/or sleep?
Decide On A Kitchen Style
Before even talking to a kitchen designer, think long and hard about the kitchen style you would like to go for. There’s a huge difference between a country-style kitchen and a traditional one. And then there are also shaker, farmhouse, Victorian or Georgian, contemporary, vintage, modern, and retro-style kitchens – and quite a few hybrid options.
Do as much research as possible and talk to your spouse or partner before deciding on a kitchen style. This is not a decision you can easily change halfway through the job.
Decide On A Layout
Next, you have to decide on the basic layout of your remodeled kitchen. The most common types are:
The U-shaped kitchen. This type of layout provides quick access to the food preparation, cooking, and washing sections of the kitchen. Unfortunately, it seldom allows sufficient space for a table and chairs.
The L-shaped Kitchen. This remains one of the most popular kitchen layouts because it allows for a variety of storage solutions. Plus, there is usually sufficient space for a breakfast table or bar.
The Island-shaped Kitchen. This is another very popular option. The island layout provides for a functional and practical space, particularly if it is combined with built-in appliances and tall storage cabinets. Kitchen islands are also excellent for socializing.
Draw Up An Action Plan
When it comes to kitchen remodeling, certain things must be done before others. Just like you won’t take a bath before taking off your clothes, you should make a decision about the countertop and the sink (or sinks) at least five weeks before the cabinets are going to be installed.
Here at Kustom Kabinetry, if you purchase the sink and countertop through us, the countertop manufacturer will also deliver and install the sink. Remember that the majority of sinks don’t come with strainer baskets, so you have to buy them or ask the plumber to provide them when the sink is hooked up.
Note: We don’t stock faucets. We do, however, recommend that you purchase a decent quality faucet from your local plumbing supply outlet. Just make sure the internal parts are not cheap knockoffs. The faucet should be at your home the day before the countertop measure will take place.
You should also be aware that because Kustom Kabinetry specializes in custom kitchen cabinets, we do not provide plumbing services. You need to get a professional plumber to take care of that.
If you intend to install tile or a similar surface on the whole back wall between the upper cabinets and the base, you might not have to buy a 4-inch splash. In all other cases, it is highly recommended.
